Syllabus for Speaking III

Speaking III course is designed to help students to become proficient in formal presentation skills for a variety of information types. The course will expose students to a wide range of concepts in planning, supporting and performing an academic and technical presentation.

At the end of the course, students should be able to perform an effective media assisted and interactive academic presentation.

Course Objective:

This course will focus on helping students’ speech, presentation techniques, media and organization skills for formal, media supported academic and professional presentations. Other objectives will include:

q Develop and practice planning and oral skills for presenting to and interacting with audience with varied backgrounds

q Develop proficiency in using media presentation

q Practice and develop academic and presentation skills

q Interact effectively in small groups to complete assignments

q Understand the criteria for giving a successful academic or professional presentation

Assessment:

Practical assessment for this course will be based on giving :

a. an individual presentation (10 minutes maximally for each) on the topic of their own choice, for their final assessment

b. a team-work presentation (15 minutes each, maximum)

c. students will also be given credits for participating actively as listeners with thoughtful comments and questions to the presenters

d. each students will also be required to produce a short-written essay covering their individual presentation

Course Presentation:

This course consists of 16 meetings and students should meet 100% of the presentation, the percentage of the course, is as follows:

- Team-work Presentation 30%

- Final Presentation and essay 60%

- Attendance 10%

Please notify that you are required to attend the class at least 80% of the meetings. Students who have absences for 4 times at the most, will not be eligible to present their final presentation.

Course Description:

Week 1

Introduction to the course, defining learning objectives, methods of assessment, choosing the topics, structuring the academic presentation

Week 2

Oral and physical presentation; breathing, voice projection, finding voice, gaining confidence, using of body language

Week 3

Asking appropriate questions in an academic seminar, inviting and handling questions

Team-work presentation 1, preliminary assessment

Week 4

Patterns of stress and intonation in English - giving variation to the voice; clarity of diction

Team-work presentation 2, preliminary assessment

Week 5

Political speeches. Study some famous speeches and how they achieve their effects

Week 6

Presentation tools: visual and multi media use

Week 7

Working individually. Choosing topic for final presentation

Week 8

Final Presentation

  1. Good job! This is a good start both for the students and the lecturers. With this syllabus, the students are expected to be more well prepared before they get into the classroom. Perhaps, the students can extensively employ this facility to post and share their final draft of presentations.
    This is an innovative thing. Keep it up Bu YY.
